Irish Culture
Ireland is an island located in Western Europe with its neighbours
being, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. It is a cold rainy
country that has a small population, only about 5 million people.
Some of the major parts of Irish culture that are world renowned are
their pub culture, sporting teams/ support and their faith/ religion.
I would say that one of the biggest parts of Irish culture is
their love and appreciation of sport. There big two sports are Gaelic Football
and Hurling. These two sports are nearly explicitly played in Ireland and both
sports have national televised leagues. Sports attendances in the last decade have
increased a lot with 34% of attendances for Gaelic football, 23% for hurling
and 16% for soccer.
Pub culture
is a huge part of Irish culture as it is one of the most popular places to
socialise. The pub is a major part of each and every town as the weather is not
usually great. This means that a hearty pub is a very desirable place for the
tows folk to meet. Guinness, one of their favourite beers is world renowned for
being just that, a great beer.
Another
major part of the Irish culture is the arts. Irish music is quite well known
around the world. Irish dancing is also one of the most famous dancing styles
and is very tough. Ireland is also very well known for its folklore stories and
general story telling. With tales of leprechauns, ogres and trolls it is very
well known.
With the
biggest part of Irish culture being saved for last, religion. Almost 80% of all
Irish people identified as Christian in their 2016 census. In every sing
town/city in Ireland there is at least one church or cathedral. Ever since
being colonised by England in 16th and 17th centuries Ireland
has accepted and taken to Christianity.
In multiple surveys taken by the Irish
people it was said that the 3 most common spots to be seen in Ireland are the
church, local pub or local sport clubhouse.
As you
can see sport, religion and the pub are all major contributors to the daily
life of Irish people.
Very detailed and informative about the culture as well as being written very nicely.
